I love sandwiches. I love that it is a whole package meal that you get to eat with your hands. I’m a big fan of food that you can eat without flatware and it is acceptable. With that being said, I used to have a big problem with pickles on my sandwiches (burgers included). I love pickles in every other form except on sandwiches. That was until I had my first Cuban (no this is not code for sex).

In case you don’t know what is on this sandwich- it is a combination of ham, pork (yes I realize ham is pork), sauce, pickles, and cheese. This sandwich did all the great things for my taste buds and I totally enjoyed the pickles. They added a flavor that would be completely missed if they weren’t there so they are important. This sandwich changed my outlook on pickles to the point that I am now on a quest to find the best Cuban sandwich in St Louis.

I have asked friends for their opinion on who they think has the best Cuban sandwich. I received a pretty solid list but if I hear about any others they will be added to competition. I am one person with an opinion which you may have heard the expression- opinions are like assholes, everyone has one. So because of this and the fact that this shouldn’t be one sided, I recruited JD to be another judge***.

The contenders:

Gramophone
Boogaloo
Pickles Deli
The Fountain
City Diner
Shamrocks
Wood Shack

The categories of judgement:

Price
Bread
Meat
Sauce

***We are not professionals in the food realm; we just really enjoy eating. We are not food snobs and will try pretty much anything. With this said, we are just doing this for the fuck of it cause why not.***

Based on the above categories the rating scale is 1-5 with 1 being the worst and 5 being the best.

On to the competition and may the best sandwich win!
